To process cards via your website or a virtual terminal, you will need a Internet Merchant number. Once you have this, you then require a Payment Service Provider (PSP) or Gateway.  For the merchant number, you will be charged Intercharge rates from Visa & MasterCard (often referred to as transaction costs from the Bank Acquirer who provides the Merchant number).  The PSP also typically makes a  monthly charge plus additional costs per transaction.
